FDA/CDRH Variance
Lasers are regulated and governed by the CDRH. The CDRH is a department of the Food and Drug Administration. The reasons that lasers are regulated are because of misuses of lasers in the past. Lasers in all their beauty can be dangerous to human tissue, primarily the optical tissue, if misused. Lasers below 5mW do not require a variance. There are however safety rules regarding height and operation. Any laser with an output over 5mW requires a variance.
